BRAIN FOODS
While the brain is very complex, its needs are very basic. Like every cell in the body, the brain requires specific nutrients so that it may function properly. What we eat and drink therefore can have an impact on the way we feel, act, and function neurologically. What we lack in nutrients can likewise impact our brain health in an adverse manner. As a rule of thumb, foods that are 'live', raw, fresh and unprocessed are ideal such as fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. Foods that are overly processed, deprived of essential nutrients and artificially colored and flavored are the worse (such as many snacks on the market today). In essence, the brain requires the following:
Water
Vitamins (all vitamins are important but B vitamins play an important role as far as brain function)
Minerals (minerals such as magnesium and zinc are crucial for the brain)
Amino acids (various amino acids help with specific brain functions)
Essential fatty acids ('good fats')
Glyconutrients ('good sugars')
Another type of brain 'food' is found in the psychosocial and spiritual realms. The brain and the mind require such things as love, respect, social support, and various other factors that can boost self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image.
